Taking on fifth grade with confidence
Even as the sun begins to dip at the end of a long school day, light still streams through the big windows in Kandace Ortiz’s classroom at Hanrahan Elementary in Jennings School District. Colorful artwork, stacks of books and piles of assignments hint at the 60 students that file in and out of her room each day.
Building engineers at Cardinal Ritter
With steady hands, a team of high school students carefully placed a pack of index cards on top of a tower made only of straws and paper clips, holding their breath to see if it would stand.
For one school day, Washington University’s Institute for School Partnership (ISP) worked alongside Cardinal Ritter College Prep High School to put on a science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) challenge.
Dedication to education
An individual’s level of dedication is often measured by the time spent in service to a particular cause. For Jack Wiegers, his dedication to science education cannot only be measured in hours and days but in years, 64 years to be exact.
For that, on August 22, 2015, the St. Louis Area Physics Teachers (SLAPT) awarded Wiegers the first ever Gene Fuchs Memorial Lifetime Accomplishment award.
